Apple announced HomePod mini 2 on October 13 with new colors, Sound Glow lighting, and a clear Mac desk angle: it can serve as the default speaker for Mac. Pre-orders opened the same day in the US and more than 23 other countries and regions. Availability begins Friday, October 30, at $149. Colors are pink, green, blue, white, and midnight. The speaker needs HomePod software 27.2.
Why Mac users should notice
Apple pairs HomePod mini 2 with Mac for movies, gaming, FaceTime, and video calls, and shows color-matched desk setups.
- Price and date: $149, pre-order now, ships October 30
- Chip: Apple S10 with computational audio for dynamic range and loudness
- Surround: four-speaker theater with Apple TV 4K (4th generation), auto-calibrated by position
- Voice: up to six users; Siri AI arrives later via software update in English markets
- Home hub: control accessories from Home on iPhone when away; smoke and CO sound alerts
- Visual: Sound Glow pulses with music or soundscapes on the top surface
Siri AI is not day-one. Apple says it comes in a future update in the US, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and the UK. Personal-context actions need a paired Apple Intelligence iPhone or iPad. Stereo pairs and multiroom audio remain supported.
Limits before you pre-order
This does not mean every Mac gains better speakers without setup, or that Siri AI ships with the hardware on October 30. Confirm HomePod software 27.2 on your network, and verify the Mac default-speaker feature on your macOS version once units arrive. Four-speaker surround also requires the new Apple TV 4K.
Our take: if you want better desk audio inside Apple Home, the Mac default-speaker story is the practical reason to look. If you only need a cheap AirPlay target, wait for reviews comparing S10 audio and whether Siri AI on the mini is useful for calendar and message lookups.
Color matching with iMac is design marketing, not a requirement.
