Touch on Mac dev hub opens with videos and labs, but no Xcode beta yet
Apple posted three touch design and coding talks plus November labs for Mac developers; Xcode 27.3 beta is pending.

Apple opened a "Touch on Mac" developer hub on October 28, 2026, the same day it announced the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, its first touchscreen Mac. The page offers three new tech talk videos, two online group labs in November, and links to the relevant Human Interface Guidelines. Xcode 27.3 beta and new documentation are listed as "Coming soon."
What developers get now
The three videos cover the basics of moving a Mac app from pointer-first to touch-aware:
- "Design for Touch on Mac" covers touch and system gestures, sizing touch targets without hurting pointer use, hover interactions, and how native steppers, dials and sliders expand under a finger.
- "Bring Touch to your Mac app" explains moving from classic mouse tracking code to gesture recognizers and NSControl events, expanding hit targets, custom touch scrolling, and disabling system gestures where needed.
- "Bring Live Activities to Mac" shows how Live Activities appear in the menu bar and Dynamic Island, built with ActivityKit, SwiftUI and App Intents.
The group labs run online on November 18 from 9 to 10 a.m. Pacific and November 19 from 6 to 7 p.m. Pacific, with registration open now through the developer site.
What this means for your apps
Apple says macOS automatically translates touches into clicks, so most existing Mac apps will respond to touch without changes. Apps that rely on custom mouse tracking, tiny controls, or hover-only menus are the ones likely to feel awkward. The new MacBook Pro ships November 6, but Xcode 27.3 beta is not out yet, which leaves developers with videos and guidelines rather than final SDKs for now.
If you run a Mac on a team that depends on in-house or niche tools, expect touch support to arrive unevenly. This does not mean every Mac app needs a redesign; keyboard and trackpad remain the primary input on every other Mac Apple sells.
Our take: shipping videos and labs on launch day is the right move, but the missing Xcode beta means early buyers should not expect polished touch support from third-party apps for weeks.
Caveats: Apple has not published a date for Xcode 27.3 beta or the new documentation. Lab capacity and eligibility follow Apple's usual developer program rules.
