iPhone Duo hinge crack reports arrive as Apple posts its repair playbook
Early owners report inner screens cracking at the fold, and Apple's new hinge guide ends in a full display swap.

On iPhone Duo's first day in customers' hands, October 23, 2026, a handful of owners posted photos of inner displays cracked along the hinge, usually with a bright line of pixels across one side. The same day, Apple published a set of iPhone Duo support documents and a full repair manual. Apple has not commented publicly on the crack reports.
What owners are reporting
The reports, gathered by MacRumors and The Verge from Reddit and forums, are few and unverified. One owner in Australia said the screen cracked after fewer than 20 openings with no prior damage, and that an Apple Store replaced the phone on the spot. Other photos show broken demo units in China, where the backstory is unknown and user damage is possible.
What Apple's documents say
Apple's "iPhone Duo Troubleshooting Hinge Issues" page, dated October 23, covers a phone that will not open or close fully, noise while folding, a loose, bent or broken hinge, and enclosure damage. Key points:
- Apple states there are no diagnostics or software remedies for hinge issues, so restarting or restoring will not help.
- Owner checks: remove third-party cases and screen protectors, listen while folding, confirm the hinge holds every position, and look for grit along the fold.
- The final step is replacing the whole inner display assembly, and Apple warns a new part may not fix the issue.
- The iPhone Duo Repair Manual lists procedures for both displays, both batteries, the enclosure, and the Touch ID buttons, though 9to5Mac reports Duo parts are not yet in the Self Service Repair Store.
What to do if you bought one
Check the fold early and often during the first two weeks. Apple's online store gives 14 calendar days from delivery to return an item, and a defect from normal use should fall under Apple's one-year limited warranty, which does not cover accidental damage. Without AppleCare+, Apple's estimate for inner display damage is $999. Do not attempt a home repair on a new unit under warranty.
This does not mean the Duo hinge is flawed by design; a few failures among a large first batch are normal for any new product.
Our take: if you rely on a Duo for work, buy AppleCare+ or keep your old iPhone ready until the return window closes.
Caveat: Apple has given no figures, and early reports can overstate a problem.
